US Open Day 2 Picks
I’ve got some plays for day 2 of the US Open today. Day 1 was filled with excitement as Serena Williams won in what is likely her last US Open. There were also a few upsets on the men’s side that saw 6 seeded players go down. We hit on our first two picks yesterday, with one being much more of a sweat than the other. We had Tim van Rijthoven (+135) come back from two sets down to defeat Zhizhen Zhang in a five set thriller. Our other win saw the 20 year old Brit, Jack Draper (-115), defeat Emil Ruusuvuori of Finland fairly convincingly in three sets. Here is what we have cooking up on day 2.
Hubert Hurkacz vs Oscar Otte over 35 (-120)
One thing you will see from me when following my picks is I love betting overs in the majors. I think it is much easier to find the matches that will go over three sets rather than the ones that will be over in three. Hurkacz comes into the tournament as the number 8 seed and has found success over the last few years playing in the United States. Anyone who describes Oscar Otte’s playing style will almost always use the words “tricky’’ or “crafty”. You like that in a guy that you want to get a set off of or even upset a superior opponent. Otte made the 3rd round at Wimbledon this year and upset the 20th seed Lorenzo Sonego at last year’s US Open en route to a fourth round appearance. Hurkacz won the only head to head meeting between the two but also dropped a set in doing so at Indian Wells this year. I like Hurkacz to win this match but I am very confident that Otte can take a set.
Sam Querrey vs Ilya Ivashka over 33 (-120)
If there’s another thing I like betting as much as overs in majors, it’s betting Americans on US soil. Ivashka is a player who has been on the rise since his win at the Winston-Salem Open last year. I am confident he will win this match as a very large favorite (-1200) but I look at him being 129th on tour in break points won as a weakness that Querrey can use to his advantage. Sam Querrey has been a shell of his former self in recent months but I think he will wake up for this US Open. Americans are expected to perform well in the US Open compared to other majors and I like Querrey to use his solid serve to win a set in a tiebreaker.
David Goffin vs Lorenzo Musetti over 38 (-115)
This is just not a match that will be completed in three sets. Neither player has what it takes at the moment to win three straight sets against the other. Musetti is not known for his play on hard courts, especially in the US Open. Goffin has been in better form as of late but hasn’t shown the ability to put together a complete match, even in wins. Despite Musetti being the seeded player in this tournament, Goffin is the favorite in this match (-150). All of these factors are a recipe for a four set match, if not a five-setter. I am not confident enough to pick a winner but back the over as I like this match to go over 40 games.
Jack Sock vs Diego Schwartzman - Sock +4 games (-120)
Here we go again, backing an American in the US Open. Schwartzman has played well so far this season with a few final appearances under his belt. “El Peque” as some call him is more of a clay specialist but is fairly consistent as is apparent by his #16 world ranking. He is known for his return game which will work well against Sock’s serve but I think Jack Sock will perform well enough to give Schwartzman some fits. Sock has had some early exits in the last few months but he always seems to show out at the US Open. This is a match that I think Sock can win if he is nailing his serve and I am certain he can at least win a set. Sock won the only meeting between the two back at the 2017 Italian Open. With all that being said I like taking Sock at +4 games as I think the sets he does lose will be around 7-6 or 6-4.
